Yield: Picture Jesus

~ written by Connie Dunmyer

How do I see Jesus? How do you see Jesus? Last week I wrote about His voice. But how do I see or recognize the Son of God? The book of Revelation has a lot of imagery. Some of it is likely symbolic. But that doesn’t mean that many things are not literal. After all, who could have imagined the literal plagues that hit Egypt as the Lord brought His people out of slavery? I think it’s important to not simply skim or skip over words because we don’t understand them.

Revelation 1:12-17

Jesus with the LampstandsI turned around to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like a son of man, [Daniel 7:13] dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace [fine brass], and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp, double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.”

The lampstands represent The Church – capital C – the Body of Christ. Lampstands do not give light of themselves. They hold the light. They show the light. Jesus IS that light. Only HE is that Light. And we see Jesus, walking among the Church.

Leviticus 26:12I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people

Today I’d like for us to look at this loving, very personal Savior by examining how He reveals Himself to us through these images. Just like I was changed by looking at the Holy Spirit’s attributes and descriptions, I think it may be helpful to look at this picture of Jesus. The purpose being to be changed by His image.

Robe down to his feet. This is Princely & Priestly robe… a description of the high priest, described in Exodus 28:4. Jesus is our High priest.

1 Timothy 2:5For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus

I can literally come to Jesus with and for everything. He understands. And He is constantly making intercession for me. When God looks at me, He sees Jesus!

ephodGolden sash gird about him [NIV] or Girt about the paps with a golden girdle [KJV]. This is the breast-plate of the high priest, on which the names of his people are engraved.

In Exodus 28, it was engraved with the names of each of the 12 tribes. But with Jesus as my High Priest, my name is engraved upon the Savior. He carries my name with Him always.

Hair like wool. The Ancient of Days referred to in Daniel 7. He always was, is, and will be. I also think that using the term “wool” refers to Him being the Lamb.

Jesus is no longer a weak baby in a manger, and He’s not on the cross anymore. He is alive forevermore – He IS Power. And He has gifted that to me, to all who call upon His name.

Hair white as snow. No sign of decay. Pure white for purity. No sin. Snow can also be blinding and so it kind of goes along with His face as a sun.

Hebrews 4:14-15 “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven,  Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are — yet he did not sin.”

Jesus is able to help me live this life He has called me to. And because Jesus is sinless, I know I can trust every word, every promise, because He cannot lie.

The ChosenEyes like blazing fire. Piercing and penetrating into the very hearts and minds of each of us, scattering terrors among his adversaries, convicting us of anything contrary to His will. Denotes His omniscience, the complete and infallible knowledge of everything, including the past, present, and future.

It makes me think of scenes in The Chosen, where Jesus looks into the eyes of people he is calling – and it’s piercing. It’s life-changing. I think for a long time I was afraid to look into His eyes. My unworthiness shamed me. But then I found out that looking into His eyes, knowing that He saw me, ALL of me, and still loved me, changed me. It’s actually a comfort. And you can’t fake that.

The Chosen: Jesus calls Matthew

Feet like hot glowing bronze or fine brass. Unshakeable strength, stability, steadfastness, and permanence. Our firm foundation. Able to subdue his enemies, even treading them to powder. Purity through fire.

Nothing I have ever done, or ever will do, stops His love for me. He is ever watching over me. He has my life and my future in His hands. Nothing can stop that.

Romans 8:38-39 “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Voice like rushing waters. He can and will make himself heard to those who are afar off as well as to those who are near.

On those days when I am uncertain about what I should do, or if I’m truly hearing from Jesus, I can be confident that His words, His voice, is sure and He will make Himself known to me when I need it. Even when I was far away from Him – angry with Him – trying NOT to hear Him, He was speaking. I could hear Him. I knew.

Sharp, double-edge sword coming out of His mouth. He IS the Word of God, and the words of God.

Hebrews 4:12 “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”  I’m thankful that Jesus doesn’t judge me for the results. He judges my heart.

Jesus RevelationFace shining like the sun. Too bright and dazzling for mortal eyes to behold. His face was like the disk of the sun in the brightest summer's day, when there were no clouds to obscure the splendor of his rays.

Reminds me of when God told Moses he could not see His face and so He hid Moses in the cleft and only let him see His back [Exodus 33:18-23]. And how when Moses came down from the mountain, his face shined so bright he covered it [Exodus 34:29-35].

If a face can shine because God was near, imagine how bright the face of Jesus must be. He is the Light, and He will show me the way. There is no darkness that cannot be dispelled by His presence.

Seven stars in his right hand.  The 7 stars and the angels, messengers, ministers of the 7 churches… The Church. All in His right hand, which represents protection, power and miraculous intervention.

Being in the right hand of Christ shows that I am under his special care and most powerful protection. The Church is His beloved – His bride. He has done, and will do anything for her.

Placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I AM the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

I've felt this comfort from Jesus before. There was one specific time in the past couple of years where I was panicking and couldn’t seem to calm down. And then I felt it. I felt someone or something touching my hair. There was no one else there, and I wasn’t outside in the breeze. At first I thought it was a bug, so I brushed my fingers through my hair. Nothing. And then I felt it again. All of a sudden, I recognized not only His hand on my head, but I heard in my spirit, “It’s going to be okay. It’s going to be okay.” He was stroking my hair and comforting me. The panic stopped immediately.

Jesus is the only One Who can say who lives and who dies. He controls my life, my health, and my future… AND my eternity. I do not have an expiration date. I only have His will.

I know this was a bit long. It’s easy to pick and choose how we picture Jesus. But I think that really looking at the picture of Jesus, that Jesus Himself has given us, can change how we live our days… even the dark or mundane ones. For no day with Jesus can truly be mundane, nor can it be dark. Not if we really see Him. Not if we really picture Him with us. And not if we really worship Him. For He is worthy – of ALL our praise [Revelation 5:12].
