Do you believe in miracles? Do you believe angels are among us? Have you ever seen one? Do you have an experience or two where you know that an angel intervened on your behalf? In my blog “What Do These Stones Mean”, I write about the first angel I recognized in my life.
But there are a few more times in my life that I can recognize the hand of God protecting me, likely via angels.
In the book by Frank Peretti titled “This Present Darkness”, there is an angel named Tal (warrior angel and leader of the angelic host). While this book is “fiction”, I believe I may have had my own “Tal”, my own warrior angel, protecting me.
In the 90’s we moved to San Bernardino, California to pastor a church there. To say there was culture-shock involved is an understatement. The first day we arrived, we sat in our hotel room watching a police chase on TV that was just down the street. Shortly after moving into our house, were awakened by gunfire and a police helicopter over our house. Suffice it to say we got to know the carpet pretty well.
I always considered myself “street-smart” – but clearly my guardian angel would disagree. One day shortly after moving into our house on Date Street while I was at home alone with my 3-year-old daughter, there was a knock at the door. That’s not all that unusual to have people come over without calling first when you are in ministry. So I answered the door. There was a screen door which was all that separated me and the 20-something young man standing there.
He said he was “selling something”. I don’t remember what. In fact, I doubt he knew what he was “selling”. Because as I opened the door, he began backing up – quickly. In an effort to be neighborly, I opened the screen door. At this point, the young man was tripping over himself and backing up so fast down the sidewalk that he was nearly at the road. I even remember calling out, “hey, if you give me your information, I will ask my husband as soon as he comes home!” He did not comply. He just kept running.
I just told him I was alone. I opened the door, the same door that is hidden from the road, so that no passersby could see anything. But this young man fairly ran away.
As I closed the door and pondered how weird that interaction was, it occurred to me that I had just been as dumb as a box of rocks. Almost immediately I had a picture in my head of what happened. Yes – I was “alone” – but I wasn’t really “alone”. When I opened that door, what this young man saw was my very own warrior-guardian-angel standing behind me. I like to think he looks like Ving Rhames.
2 Kings 6:15-17 “When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked. ‘Don’t be afraid,’ the prophet answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ And Elisha prayed, ‘Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.’ Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
Psalm 91:11-12 “For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands…”
Hebrews 1:14 “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?”
So why do I bring this up?
Do you ever feel alone? Insignificant?
Are you ever convinced that you’ve done something so stupid that there’s no way God could ever fix it? Or that He would even want to?
Do you ever think your life doesn’t matter?
Been there. Done that.
Not only does your life matter, not only are you not alone, but all the stupid things you’ve ever done does not stop the Father from coming to your rescue – whether you can see it or not. He will literally move heaven and earth for His kiddos.
So why angels?
God does not need angels.
But He chooses to use them to display His glory in more dimensions. He shows His kingdom is larger than the visible world and uses angels to demonstrate authority and service in the unseen realm. They remind us that true reality is bigger than what we can see.
And what’s more, God uses these heavenly beings to help small, undeserving, me. The same girl who makes a ton of mistakes and fails on a daily basis. God sends heaven to help and protect me. To protect you.
And so once again I am taken back to 2 Corinthians 4:18 – “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
On difficult days when I consider what God has done for me, and that He has even enlisted angels to protect me, I am overwhelmed.
I am in awe.
And all my problems, great as they may be, tend to fall away into the abyss from which they came.
Angels before me. Angels behind me. Angels around me. Angels to pick me up. Angels to comfort. All sent to do the Father’s bidding – to serve and help His child.
So be on the lookout. You never know but what you may be "entertaining angels unaware" (Hebrews 13:2).
